The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam
Author: Ann Marie Fleming
Illustrator: Ann Marie Fleming and Julian Lawrence

To cite Fleming's own end quote, "History is relatives." In The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam, Fleming walks the reader through the life of her maternal great-grandfather, the magician Long Tack Sam, while also relating her research process and family history. The amalgamation of sketches, family photographs, playbills and advertisements, along with asides, sidebars and footnotes, make Long Tack Sam both a compelling and dense read. Fleming's attention to detail reanimates Sam's vaudevillian, peripatetic; Sam performed in China, Europe, America and Australia, eventually integrating his daughters into his act. When vaudeville died, he refused to make the move to films, preferring the stage life that allowed him to avoid stereotypical roles, and his popularity eventually faded, along with his legend.
